Just a few days ago we told you that the big studios were taking a pass at distributing the next Woody Allen movie, Cassandra’s Dream. This was bad news for people who had seen Mighty Aphrodite, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Match Point. Conversely, it was good news for people who had seen Everyone Says I Love You, Hollywood Ending, Small Time Crooks, and Curse of the Jade Scorpion. Like many great filmmakers, Allen has had his hits and misses but there have been more misses lately than hits and even the hits haven’t shown much box-office life.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view) the Weinstein Company loves movies and doesn’t care much about filthy lucre. The Hollywood Reporter says that Bob and Garvey Weinstein’s shop has obtained the distribution rights to Cassandra’s Dream for the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. Allen is very happy even if he can’t remember that there are two Weinstein brothers. He said, "Harvey is one of the only producers-distributors around who can actually see beyond the grosses and gets real pleasure out of presenting fine movies."
The movie, as has been the case for his other recent pictures, takes place in London. Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Tom Wilkinson, and Sally Hawkins will star. McGregor and Farrell play brothers whose lives head towards tragedy. It sounds more like a drama in the Match Point vein and that might be a good thing. Allen’s recent comedies have had their problems.
