I don’t know anyone who’s actually seen it, but somehow, against all expectations, Alvin & the Chipmunks continues to make money hand over fist at the box office. It’s utterly baffling. It’s just a bunch of stupid CGI rats people! I know, I get all nostalgic for those old records and cartoons from when I was a kid too… but the movie has made more than National Treasure 2. It’s already the most successful animation/live-action combo movie ever made. Yes, even more successful than Pete’s Dragon. It could end up beating Ratatouille as the most successful family film of 2007. That’s an awful lot of nostalgia.

Enough nostalgia that it’s going to earn Alvin and the gang a second trip to movie theaters. I mean, with those kinds of numbers it just about has to doesn’t it? This is Hollywood we’re talking about here. The guys over at MTV managed to get the movie’s producer Janice Karman to give them the scoop on Chipmunks sequel plans, and she admits: “There has been a lot of talk about it… A lot of people have been asking about the little girls.”

The little girls in question would be the Chipettes, female mirror images of the Chipmunks which showed up regularly on the old cartoon series. If you’re going to make a sequel, bringing in Brittany, Eleanor, and Jeanette is the obvious direction to go. I just hope Brittany’s not still wearing that creepy miniskirt.
