Everything that was 80s is new again. This year we’ll have Transformers and the computer animated Ninja Turtles movie, in 2008 it may be Magnum P.I. and a live action/CGI version of Alvin and the Chipmunks. I think I’m going to miss 2007.

Yep, those annoying, singing little falsetto bastards from the cartoons are coming in movie form. Alvin, Simon, Theodore and that creepy dude who acts like their dad but clearly isn’t (come on, they’re different species) are headed to theaters and they’ve found the perfect guy to direct them. Tim Hill, the director of Garfield 2 and Max Keeble’s Big Movie. He knows a thing or two about making crappy movies out of cartoon characters nobody cares about anymore and so Fox is talking to him about helming their Chipmunk pic.

The reason they’re calling it a live action, CGI mix is that they’re planning to make Alvin, Simon, and Theodore computer generated characters wandering around in the real world. Basically exactly what they did so spectacularly unsuccessfully on the Garfield movies. But at least Garfield is a cat. I mean, cats actually exist in reality. Plunking Garfield down in reality doesn’t take much of a leap of faith. Giant talking chipmunks who wear clothes and perform at rock concerts do not. How is that going to work? It won’t, and even if it could they aren’t going to hire the kind of people who will make it work. Instead Fox is hiring the guy who made Garfield 2. They’ve already given up.

Alright, maybe I’m being kind of harsh. Alvin and the Chipmunks was kind of awesome when I was five. But aren’t modern kids way past that sort of entertainment? They want movies about people battling each other with decks of cards, not singing rats. I just don’t see the point in making this and worse if they do, there will almost certainly be a spin-off movie or sequel featuring the Chipettes. We’re in for at least two terrible movies here folks, not just one.
