It's Super Bowl Sunday so you're getting the Super Bowl version of the top ten. Frankly, I'm far too disappointed in Americans this weekend to get worked over the box office anyway.
It's a sad day when the knock-off, second rate, critically panned remake, When A Stranger Calls, takes the number one spot. Even though it only made $22 million, I would rather have seen Big Momma's House 2 stay on top for a second weekend. That's how depressed I am about it.
America wasn't ready for Something New, or maybe they were satisfied with Ashton Kutcher's version on the cross-racial relationship film. Either way, they handed it 7th place with a sad $5 million on opening weekend.
The Chronicles of Narnia finally disappeared from the list after a healthy 8 weeks in the top ten. Meanwhile Walk the Line popped back onto the radar, no doubt thanks to its various Oscar nods. You go Reese!
Brokeback Mountain keeps working its way back up the ladder. Now in its 5th consecutive weekend in the top ten it's enjoying all that award nominations glow. Despite climbing in rank and number of theaters it's slowly slipping in actual ticket sales. Now that everyone in America has finally had a chance to see what the fuss is about look for it to start dropping off at the usual rate and disappearing quickly under the weight of next weekend's massive series of debuts.
Curious George, Final Destination 3, The Pink Panther and Firewall all open on Friday and there's a distinct possibility the weekend could be huge. Curious George is back to show there's still a place for hand drawn animation in the world and Firewall is the first Harrison Ford movie in a long time to have a chance at not being a complete disaster. My money's on the monkey, but what will be interesting is how much America is willing to spend at the movies. Is the box office slowly regaining steam or have the last two weeks been lingering belches of ticket sales indigestion?
