Though before the summer is through she'll have dyed her hair dark and joined the production of Zack Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel, Amy Adams is making time for a much smaller and even more highly anticipated project first. According to Deadline she's been confirmed to play female lead in Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled new project, previously called The Master, in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns from World War II and starts a new religion. Joaquin Phoenix is also set to play Hoffman's character's assistant, Swedish actress Lena Endre is also reportedly taking a role, and as we learned yesterdays, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and David Warhofsky have joined the cast as well.

Anderson has been developing the project for years, pretty much since the minute he was done with the Oscar season for There Will Be Blood, and there was a time last summer when it seemed ready to start shooting with Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon and Jeremy Renner in the three lead roles. It's unclear exactly what stalled out the project during rehearsals, but Anderson has regrouped fairly admirably, brought on replacement actors who are equally as talented as Witherspoon and Renner if not more so, and is finally stepping behind the camera for the first time since 2008. Adams will be having a huge next few years, between this fall's Muppets and Superman, but I think there's more than a few of us who think this is by far the most excting project she's got lined up.
