In an eerily appropriate bit of casting, SNL’s newest superstar Andy Samberg will play a monkey. Not just any monkey, but a chimp. Now look at Samberg with one eye closed. Now imagine him picking bugs out of some other chimp’s hair. It’s too easy.
The story comes from the Hollywood Reporter where they say Samberg, Jeff Daniels, Kenan Thompson, Stanley Tucci, and Patrick Wharburton have all been hired to provide voices for the new computer animated 20th Century Fox comedy Space Chimps. Andy Samberg plays Ham III, the grandson of Ham, the first chimp sent into space. NASA recruits Ham III to test the waters inside a black hole, which he travels through to a planet on the other side. Here’s where it gets weird: once on the other side, Ham III and his celebrity voiced monkey crew help rid the planet’s inhabitants of a local bad guy. It’s sort of like a monkey-powered, space-borne version of The Three Amigos… I guess.
Apes in space is always good fun, and since it looks like we’d rather spend money on blowing each other up than exploring the cosmos and furthering the human race, it’s probably also a lot more realistic than making a movie about actual dudes checking out the stars. Am I the only one who hates the idea that I’ll be dead long before man ever sets foot on Mars? Sorry, that just sucks.
