Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt Working Together On A Mystery Movie
When it comes to big screen super-couples, it's pretty difficult to match Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, both of whom command top dollar and crank out box office hits in all genres. But they haven't worked together since Mr. And Mrs. Smith, unusual considering their combined star power is massive. A project that's in its early stages is about to solidify their statuses, however, teaming the Hollywood Power Couple, once again.
Deadline reports that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will once again co-star in an untitled film, one that Jolie has apparently written. The project has not been taken to a studio yet, but, c'mon: unless it costs $300 million, they're probably going to get a green light from anyone, and in fact may start an industry bidding war.
As of yet, no one is sharing the film's exact storyline. Knowing Jolie's interests, it's probably something a bit more serious. Her directing efforts so far include In The Land Of Blood And Honey and the upcoming Unbroken. The former is a deadly serious Bosnian War love story. The latter, seeing release this Christmas, is a slightly bigger affair, the Coen brothers-penned story of an Olympic prodigy captured during World War II. Clearly, she's got the bug that comes from finding success behind the camera, a similar bug that led Pitt to produce this year's Best Picture Oscar winner, 12 Years A Slave.
The two initially set off fireworks in Mr. And Mrs. Smith, which was the ideal blockbuster nine years ago: big in America, but huge overseas, garnering $478 million worldwide. Somehow, a sequel never materialized: Pitt and Jolie have remained busy, and not exactly desperate to chain themselves to a franchise. In their wake, the studio has tried going to television and attempting possible prequels, but they haven't been able to take advantage of that property without Pitt and Jolie. Their star power kills franchises! Though it would be hilarious if they made a direct-to-DVD sequel starring no-names, with Vince Vaughn returning in his thankless comic relief role. That's how studios used to treat sequels in the old days, kids.
Both Pitt and Jolie have utilized their stardom in different ways over the last few years, with Pitt working considerably more in front of the camera than Jolie. Since Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Pitt has starred in six films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, as well as ensemble pictures like The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (arguably his best performance) and The Counselor. He's not exactly rusty as a solo box office attraction, however: last year he did the legwork on the promotional circuit to push World War Z to $540 million worldwide. Currently a sequel is planned.
Jolie's star power has been put on ice recently, as her last on-screen performances were Salt and The Tourist, both of which performed marginally domestically while smashing the box office overseas. Her next is a four quadrant blockbuster, the lead role in Disney's Maleficent. But she's worked with prestige plenty after Mr. And Mrs. Smith, starring in A Mighty Heart and Changeling, both awards-material centered on Jolie's star performances. In other words, if Pitt and Jolie are successfully able to shop this around, this mystery project could be both a box office hit and a potential Oscar contender.
