Critics be darned, America turned out to partake in Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston's Break Up, making it the number one movie of the weekend. $38 million is a decent opening weekend for a romantic dramedy, but the surprise is the film's triumph over X-Men: The Last Stand.

Last Weekend the X-Men raked in an impressive 4-day Memorial Day weekend total of $120 million. It dropped to second place with $34 million, which is a larger drop than usual for big openers. While The Last Stand was busy plummeting, the furry woodland creatures of Over the Hedge were busy holding their own. At this rate they'll out pace both the broken up couple and the mutants, but serious animated competition is just around the corner.

Next weekend Pixar and Disney release their latest masterpiece, Cars. If the early reviews and success of previous Pixar films are any indication, it may very beat out X-Men for the best opening weekend so far and go on to be the highest grossing film of the year.

Another little surprise this week was the surfacting of Al Gore's feature length 2008 Presidential election campaign ad in the top ten. Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, excelled in limited release in environmentally conservative states and raked in just enough to make number nine. A series of slowly widening releases are lined up for the next few weeks and if they garner more success don't be surprised to see Gore re-entering politics in the not too distant future. After all, being a movie star first and president second worked for Ronald Reagan.

Next weekend cars is joined by the clever and entertaining Prairie Home Companion. If something original and worth watching isn't for you, there's one more movie coming next week. We'll be treated to yet another variation on The Omen, this time a remake which opens on Tuesday to shamelessly capitolize on the silly 6-6-06 as an opening date.
