I hate to admit it, but I’ve just about given up on Fanboys. I was more than happy to get a little irritated earlier this year when it looked like the movie was going to be released in a neutered, alternate-story version. As part of that, I was happy when the announcement came that the movie was going to be released as originally intended, almost a year later than we originally expected it, but still intact.
Now Fanboys is being pushed back again, and I’ve gotten to the point that I just don’t care. Kristen Bell in a Slave Leia costume or not, the endless delays have all but removed this movie from my radar, to the point that I had almost forgotten it was coming out this year anyway. Now it’s not.
Last week the LA Times ran a story on a reshuffled Weinstein Company slate, pretty much moving all the distributor’s movies after this week’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno into 2009. Among those movies is Fanboys, which will now enjoy a January release date. The excuse is that the studio is working on a cross promotion with Comcast, and the moved date will allow time to promote it properly. Whatever.
Also shifting in schedule are Crossing Over, featuring Harrison Ford and Sean Penn, the most recent Cormac McCarthy adaptation The Road (this move was previously announced), Killshot, with the excuse that they’ll be attempting to capture potential Oscar Buzz for star Mickey Rourke, and Mikael Hoffstrom’s Shanghai.
