Apparently unaware that Josh Tyler panned his latest effort, Brooklyn’s Finest, at Sundance, director Antoine Fuqua is moving ahead with his next project. I like that he doesn’t let the past get him down; he’s always looking for what gritty, violent story he can tell next.
According to what he told Coming Soon, that next story is about the New York Mob’s chief enforcer in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Gregory Scarpa, Sr. Showing that there is no honor among thieves, Scarpa was also an FBI informant for 30 years.
Fuqua said that he is in discussion with Sean Penn. Although he doesn’t state it explicitly, the assumption is that Penn would play Scarpa. Penn as a hit man in the 1970s doesn’t seem like much of a stretch for the actor, who loves a time when fashion sense went out the window. I could see him with a fake mustache playing a guy nicknamed “The Grim Reaper,” couldn’t you?
