Apatow Plans To Stay Universal![]()
Making a multi-movie deal with a hot director can sometimes be risky. It’s impossible to predict how public opinion can shift over time. Who knows? Maybe Mike Myers will be popular again in six years. But that doesn’t really matter if you’re Judd Apatow apparently.
Variety is reporting that Universal Studios has signed a three movie directing deal with Judd, which will not include any movies done through his production company. This news comes on the release day of his ridiculously uneven Funny People. According to Marc Shmuger, “I feel like we’re growing with him and watching him mature as a filmmaker, and that is a thrilling thing to be part of.” Although Apatow’s films have often been seen as box office gold, I have to wonder what his future may hold. Funny People doesn’t exactly cry out multi-watch material due to its length and weighty subjects (among other things), so it’s not unreasonable to say that this may be Apatow’s first low-earning flick. That doesn’t mean that Apatow is no longer capable of creating money makers. I’m sure he is. He just has to realize that good movies aren’t about douche bags and aren’t 13 hours long for no reason. |
