Apparently Not Busy Enough, Armie Hammer Takes On Indie Thriller 2:22![]()
Since his sly and smarmy work as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, Armie Hammer has been about as in-demand an actor as you can get-- he's starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, rescuing the lost Snow White in Tarsem's project based on the fairy tale, and as of last week was in talks to join Johnny Depp in the Old West as the title character in The Lone Ranger. With all those huge projects on his plate you'd think he'd be busy enough, but according to a press release snagged by Coming Soon, he's added an indie thriller to the list. And, I've got to say, a kind of cheesy sounding one.
The press release from Lightstream Pictures announces that Hammer will star in 2:22, a psychological thriller to be directed by the production company's founder Paul Currie (he's got two Australian films behind him, including One Perfect Day). Here's the plot description, and you can let me know if it sounds as goofy and Final Destination-esque as I'm thinking right now: 2:22 is a clever, rollercoaster thriller that centers on Dylan (Hammer) an air traffic controller who is given a jolt when he narrowly escapes being responsible for a mid air collision between two passenger planes. Caused by a mysterious blinding light that happened at 2:22, these strange occurrences continue and lead Dylan to meet Sarah, with whom he feels inexplicably linked. Together the two discover uncanny similarities with their current predicament and a double murder committed a generation ago. With a grim fate looming, Dylan must solve the mystery of 2:22 to preserve a love whose second chance has finally come. Actually, scratch Final Destination-- what this really makes me think of is Passengers, the Anne Hathaway/Patrick Wilson drama that was quietly released in theaters in 2008 and then dumped to DVD, despite the fact that Hathaway was in the process of getting her first Oscar nomination and Wilson was starring in Watchmen. I haven't even seen the movie but after reading this hilarious Onion AV Club write-up, I've learned it's a psychological drama about two people connected thanks to an airline disaster-- a vague similarity, but still there. 2:22 could very well turn out to be great, and good on Hammer for taking on a smaller role rather than just churning out a bunch of blockbusters one after another. But does anyone else suspect that, once this one comes out, we'll think he could have done a little better? |
