If you’re going to make a movie about a rock and roll band, you have to have a hot chick. Twenty years ago that would have been someone like Christina Applegate, whose “Married with Children” slutty character could easily have been a rock groupie. It seems only appropriate then that a movie about a past-due rocker would star the past hottie. Don’t get me wrong, Applegate is still quite fetching, but her career has turned from playing the hot girl next door to playing the hot mom… which makes her part in The Rocker even more appropriate.

In the movie Rainn Wilson (“The Office”) plays a over-the-hill drummer who was kicked out of his band before they hit the big time. Twenty years later, Wilson gets a second chance with a new band – a high school garage band headed by his nephew. Hollywood Reporter has announced Christina Applegate will play the love interest for Wilson, as well as the mother of the lead guitarist. Perfect casting for a woman who could have been a groupie twenty years ago.

I have to say this movie worries me a little. Anyone who has seen “The Office” knows Rainn Wilson can probably play a past-due rocker with embarrassing skill. The idea of someone like that teaming up with high school kids seems almost like a sequel to School of Rock though, doesn’t it? Casting Applegate in this sort of role also seems like a natural fit, except I just can’t picture much of an attraction between her and Wilson… or anyone and Wilson for that matter.

I guess we’ll see soon enough. The Rocker begins production next week.
