Are Dark Knight Trailers Fooling Us?

Are Dark Knight Trailers Fooling Us? Five minutes after the lights went up on Batman Begins in 2005, the theoretical sequel that was sure to follow moved to the top of my “most anticipated movie” list and has sat there ever since. Now with opening day being counted in months instead of years I’m beginning to get scared that the movie can’t hope to live up to my expectations. I do have a lot of confidence in director Christopher Nolan and the trailers have so far looked excellent. That said, Nolan hints that the trailers might not be telling us the whole story.

Nolan spoke recently to the L.A. Times about the two key villains we will see in July, the Joker and Harvey Dent/Two-Face. While the trailers have pushed the Joker heavily, Nolan said he’s not the driving force in the narrative. “Harvey Dent is a tragic figure, and his story is the backbone of this film,” Nolan said. Well, if Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart, drives the plot, what does The Joker do? Nolan explained it this way “The Joker, he sort of cuts through the film -- he's got no story arc, he's just a force of nature tearing through.” So, if you are keeping score, Dent is the backbone and The Joker is a force of nature. Well, that clears things up nicely.

This may be an attempt to let fans know that Nolan doesn’t plan on turning his whole Batman movie over to the Heath Ledger’s Clown Prince of Crime (as Tim Burton did in 1989.) Not only is Dent a major character, but Cillian Murphy will return (reportedly briefly) as Scarecrow. No matter which villain is on the screen, Nolan has one more cliché in his bag of quotes. "It's a dark and complex story and the villains are dark and complex as well." I guess you can’t ask for much more info than that.
