The subtitle for Terminator: Genesis is appropriate, because in so many ways, this is a rebirth – a bold move in a new direction for a franchise that has been around an astounding 30 years. We’re entering a brave new world, and details are scarce. So when we hear any new news on the fifth Terminator film, we pounce.
Arnold Schwarzenegger opened up to MTV during an interview for Sabotage and shared some fascinating Terminator details. Give him a listen, but we’ll analyze his comments below:
Schwarzenegger isn’t breaking new news when he promises an action-heavy sequel. Every franchise ups the stakes with subsequent sequels, and this is the fifth Terminator movie to hit theaters. Fans aren’t turning up for a two-person conversation at a coffee table, at this point. They want high-concept action sequences that top the battering-ram cars from Rise of the Machines:
But can Schwarzenegger deliver those thrills at the age of 66? Terminator: Genesis depends on it. So Schwarzenegger explains:
"The way that the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages. …"Terminator deals a lot with time travel, so there will be a younger T-800, and then what that model does later on when it gets reprogrammed, and who gets ahold of him. So it will be all kinds of interesting twists in the movie, but I feel so good."
Man, I wish we knew what he was talking about. For starters, I had no idea the Terminator’s flesh could age. So Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t have to endure hours in the make-up chair to help him look like the burly, beautiful face of terror that stalked Linda Hamilton in multiple Terminator movies. But what does he mean about a "younger" T-800? Does that lend any credence to the theory we have been hearing that this Terminator story will go back to the 1940s or ‘50s, to follow the scientist who possibly inspired the T-800? Will they cast a younger version of Arnold Schwarzenegger? Does such a person even exist?!
Here’s what we do know about Terminator: Genesis. Alan Taylor will direct, having recently dealt with Asgardian superpowers in Thor: The Dark World. The film is recasting most of its key characters, hiring Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney to play Sarah Connor, John Connor and Kyle Reese, respectively. And it is racing to meet a July 1, 2015 release date.
