For awhile there it looked like Zac Efron was the only High School Musical star who was going to be able to get off the Disney Channel and onto the big screen. Hearthrob Efron played a hearthrob in Hairspray and will probably play another hearthrob in 17 Again. His singing and dancing co-stars seemed destine for awful TV movies like Jump In and guest spots on Hannah Montana, playing Billy Ray Cyrus’ third cousin.
There is now hope though, for another member of the High School Musical cadre. Variety reports that Ashley Tisdale is in talks to star in a remake of Teen Witch. The original was released in 1989 and stared Robyn Lively as an outcast in high school who discovers she is a… you guessed it… teen witch. Although intended to be a spin-off of Teen Wolf, it turned into a semi-musical, which is right up the Tisdale’s alley.
Tisdale released a CD in 2007 and is working on becoming the next Kelly Clarkson. However, she knows what side her bread is buttered on and a teen musical superpowers thing will certainly appeal to her fans. The choice of remakes is an odd one, but the title has just enough recognition to get a few early 30 somethings into the theaters with their pre-teen daughters.
