Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie Bruno made our list of the Most Anticipated Movies of 2009 earlier today, and it looks like it’s not going to disappoint. Those wondering if he’ll be able to top the shocking, offensive humor of Borat need look no further than this report in The Sun.
Bruno is a movie much in the mold of Borat, except instead of following around a clueless Euro it chases a gay fashionista, who wanders the world interacting with, and pissing off homophobes. If The Sun is to be believed, Bruno is already test screening and shocking audiences. In particular they mention a character in the film called Jesus. He’s a black model who wears a loincloth and a crown of thorns. According to their report, “Test audiences in the US have seen an early edit and the more religious members at the screenings failed to see the funny side.” This is, apparently exactly what Cohen was going for. Normally pissing off your test audience means sending your movie back for reshoots, but in Sacha’s case it seems to mean he got it just right.
Which makes me wonder what exactly is going on with this character that’s pissing religious people off? It can’t simply be the depiction of Jesus can it? Christians play dress-up Jesus all of the time. It can’t possibly be because he’s black can it? I mean come on, Obama is president surely the son of God can have a nice, deep, tan without ruffling too many feathers. More likely, knowing Cohen, he has the character doing something truly heinous. I can’t wait to see how he gets away with it.
Less interesting though are reports of a scene in the film mocking Madonna by adopting an African orphan. I’m not sure why that means he’s mocking Madonna, she’s hardly the only celebrity to pull off that particular bit. Whoever he’s mocking, the whole celebrity adopting 3rd world babies thing has really been parodied to death. You’d think Cohen would have something better up his assless chaps.
