Amelie star Audrey Tautou is just one more great role away from serious Oscar attention here in the States, and Coco Before Chanel may be just the movie to give it to her. In the movie that Sony Pictures Classics just picked up for domestic distribution, Tautou plays the iconic fashion designer in her younger years, building the clothing line and the dynamic sense of self that made her famous.

The film opens in France in April, but Variety's article doesn't say when the film will be released stateside. Given the summertime success of another French biopic, La Vie en Rose, Coco Before Chanel might make for some great summertime counter-programming. At least I know there are a lot of audiences still smitten with Amelie who will come out to see Tautou in pretty much anything--especially if it's something as stylish as Chanel.
