The Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer: WTF Were These 10 Moments?

As promised, we were treated with a brand new trailer for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron this evening, courtesy of ESPN and Marvel Studios. Exciting as it is, though, some moments from it poke out at us throughout and leave us asking even more questions than we had before. In fact, there isn't much new information to gather in the footage, but there's to keep us thinking for the rest of the night and asking big questions about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You can watch the trailer again below for a bit of a refresher course…

Here are the 10 big moments from the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer that have had us asking, "WTF?" to our monitors all night.

Ultron

"Everyone creates the thing they dread."

Apparently Ultron watched Iron Man 3, as his foreboding warning is torn straight from that film's opening monologue: we create our own demons. Tony Stark is a man who dreams of making the world a safer place to live, but his greatest fear is that the technology he creates becomes corrupted. Ultron is a living embodiment of this idea. It’s not hard to imagine that a big part of Iron Man’s arc in The Avengers: Age of Ultron is the fact that Tony has built something that could doom all of mankind instead of save it. It’s an interesting path to put the character on, especially leading up to Captain America: Civil War.

Gun Show

The Gun Show

One shot in the trailer shows a mysterious female figure (one of a couple, as a matter of fact,) showing off some heavy artillery. From the architecture, it looks like this scene is going to take place in the HYDRA stronghold where Baron Von Strucker has been conducting his experiments on the Maximoff twins. Judging by the costume, it seems like a safe bet that this is none other than Black Widow wielding the firepower. If that’s the case, what’s going on with her costume? Those red sections on the back of her arms are definitely new, and we’re left wondering if the new get up serves extra functions.

Transport

"A Vulnerable World"

We open the trailer with a voice over from Tony Stark about how the "fragile world" needs heroes stronger than The Avengers. Considering the new transport Hawkeye and company show up with for what looks like an evacuation effort, it's hard to think of what's stronger than Stark's Avengers. Also, it looks like Wanda Maximoff is one of the unlucky few that don't make it to the rescue vehicle, as she appears to be the one who falls down amidst all of the chaos. And we’re not only scratching our heads about the larger threat, but also the capabilities of that cool looking transport beyond looking awesome.

Flashback Widow

Black Widow Flashbacks

In the first trailer for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, we saw a cryptic shot of surgical instruments and a gurney that didn't look too friendly. We now have a better idea what those shots are connected to, and it looks like The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be delivering a Black Widow flashback that gives audiences a better idea of who she was and what happened to her in the years before she signed on with the good guys at S.H.I.E.L.D. All signs point to the possibility that we'll be seeing her conditioned into a spy so lethal, she'll start to fill her infamous ledger with gallons of red, and we're tremendously excited to see how it all plays out.

Hulk-Widow

"We have no place in the world."

While we're on the subject of Natasha Romanoff, this trailer seems to be heavy on featuring moments that include her and Bruce Banner/The Hulk. With that line of dialogue, followed by a reprise of The Hulk's emotional scene with Black Widow (which now includes a shot of Hulk’s face), it looks like Banner and Romanoff may wind up bonding over their shared nature as the odd people out in The Avengers. Her checkered past and his bad side are two factors that they wish they could control and move past, but in the end they are two of the most dangerous members of the team. Still, the exact nature of their relationship remains a mystery.

Blam

Ultron Strikes

One of the scariest things about Ultron is the way in which he is able to constantly upgrade himself to more powerful forms, and he we have a look at what appears to be one of the later versions firing some super powerful lasers. Who they're aimed at, and exactly how much damage they can cause we don't know. What we do know is that Ultron is starting to look like a more and more formidable foe with each new trailer. It's true that the villain won't be fighting alone in the film, as he has a full drone army at his back, but we are still left asking a big question: just how advanced and updated will Ultron ultimately get?

Tony Smash

Brother Against Brother

Speaking of Tony Stark, this new Avengers 2 trailer also shows us Robert Downey Jr. displaying an anger that we haven't seen out of him in a good long while. This isn't the usually witty in combat Tony we all know and love = this is a clearly pissed off man who wants to destroy his opponent. The really sad thing is, that opponent is his brother in Science, Bruce Banner. What the hell happened between the two that they'd be this at odds? The fight between Hulkbuster and Hulk looks like it could be one of the most exciting action scenes of the year, but also one of the most emotional.

Witchcraft

"I'm gonna tear you apart from the inside."

One key conflicts that appears to be present in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is the fact that various teammembers are affected by visions courtesy of Wanda Maximoff's Scarlet Witch. This is a pretty dangerous weapon given that each members of the Avengers team has their own collection of personal demons that they are trying to get over, and that’s a vulnerability that Ultron will be more than happy to fully take advantage of. As he notes in the quote above, his battle with the superhero team is not just about brawn and muscle, but also brains. Exactly how the villainous robot unfolds this plan is something we're very excited to see.

Ouch

Calling Out The Thunder

Moving beyond Ultron, it looks like there maybe something more magical afoot in this Avengers: Age Of Ultron trailer - something magical enough that it looks like Thor's lightning [pwer is being drained from his very person. If you look closely, you can see a mysterious, scantily-clad woman in the background, and it appears as though she is the one responsible for the God of Thunder’s pain. Could this be Thor's vision delivered from Scarlet Witch that leads him to break off from the team? It certainly doesn’t look like a pleasant experience, and one can understand why he would want to be alone for a while.

Mystery Lady

Who's That Lady?

Perhaps the biggest mystery of The Avengers: Age Of Ultron's second teaser trailer is the strange woman disrobing in front of an even more mysterious pond. While there's no real clue as to who she is, or where she's from, evidence in the frame gives us some hints. It’s very possible that this woman is somehow tied to Thor - much like the other woman in the previously mentioned shot. In the first trailer Thor is seen in a pond of pain, and this location with the mysterious woman looks rather similar. She may very well wind up being our first clues to what awaits in Thor: Ragnarok.
