Moviegoers of a certain age-- that is, my age-- will remember that Barry Manilow's "Mandy" was a sure sign of romance, an indication to Preston (Ethan Embry) that he should go back to Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) at the end of Can't Hardly Wait. So maybe it's just because I'm a huge fan of that movie, but the idea of a romantic comedy based around Barry Manilow songs doesn't sound weird or fogey-ish to me at all.
According to Variety, the idea is to make a Love Actually-esque movie in which a group of Manilow fans are coming to Vegas to see him perform, and inevitably meet each other and fall in and out of love in the process. Yes of course this is cheesy, but so are most Manilow songs, and that's made him a very, very rich man. If it was good enough for Ethan Embry, it should be good enough for the rest of us.
