Everyone knows by now that Warner Brothers has greenlit a sequel to Superman Returns. But the question is, why? The guys over at The Movie Blog caught the latest edition of MovieHole's Caffeinated Clint column (which I usually make it a point not to miss, figures), in which Clint alleges that part of the reason Warners is pushing more Superman is because they're still interested in doing that long rumored Batman vs Superman teamup movie.
The plan for it was always to give the heroes a couple of solo adventures first, and then bring them both together for one big movie. Apparently Brandon Routh and Christian Bale have even met to discuss it. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall for that conversation? Do you think it turned into a geeky argument over who could beat up who? I have an incredibly tough time imagining Christian Bale geeking out.
Before there was Batman Begins and Superman Returns, Batman vs. Superman was rumored to be the next superhero project at the WB. They even had a script, and Wolfgang Peterson was attached to direct. Obviously, it never went anywhere and Warner Brothers went the Bryan Singer/Chris Nolan route instead.
But the project is still on the company's mind. If the next round of Batman and Superman movies does well, we could actually see a Superman/Batman battle on screen.

If this idea is still in the studio's mind then it must be OUT of its mind. A team up movie would be the fastest way to send both franchises into a "Batman & Robin"-esque tailspin and flush both completely down the toilet.
i totally agree with scott on this. Superman and batman should exist as they do now in totally different their totally different universes. I was never a fan of the justice league which teamed these two superheroes with others from the dc comic book world. Mainly because i believe that if you have superman you don't need batman, Batman besides being "the words best detective" and being totally f*cking cool has no super powers. And as far as seeing these two battle each other that's just insane! if warner go ahead with this they will do what joel shumacker tried his hardest to do which is bury the movie careers of both these fine characters. don't do it!
The biggest problem with a team up, in my opinion, would be that superman is a story of hope and goodness, which i find very bland, and it has been repeated to death with other hero's, including spiderman. Batman, on the other hand, is about revenge v justice, angst and debate over things. I love how batman presents debate over batman's good v bad ideas, whether he is right or wrong, etc. in a team up, batman would have to be a bad guy, eliminating the debate completely. Plus any fight would end up in a draw, as not to upset anyone. Overall, batmans entire appeal would be tarnished and become bland, like superman is to me. also, i hate when they work together in comics as theres no focus on their own storys, which is what makes awesome films. Now, join the batman revolution and help reject superman
I noticed in the film "I Am Legend" there was a movie advert in Times Square that had the Superman logo super-imposed over the Batman logo. This made me think WB is planning a team-up film for these two characters

Not that I feel strongly about it or anything.
