Baz Luhrman’s epic down under, Australia, has a trailer. The film stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in a romantic action-adventure around the time of World War II. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor figures prominently in the trailer, though the film is set in Northern Australia and everyone looks like they’re running around in the wild, wild west. My knowledge of Australia’s history begins and ends with Quigley Down Under, so maybe this is perfectly acceptable.

Hard to be objective ... I'm a fan of Baz Lurham. Judging the trailer, maybe the film is trying too hard but it still made the hairs on my neck stand up, and Baz has made three excellent and very original films in my opinion. With the financial crisis on top of us I think people are even more likely to go to the movies, and more likely to see "big" films. Escapisim with a bit of history thrown in and the great Aussie spirit etc. etc. ... sounds like a big Aussie hit to me. Not so sure about the US though. I don't think it will be as big over there as Crocodile Dundee was. Different times. I think they're too busy contemplating themselves (as usual) and the financial crisis which a lot of Americans seem to think is only affecting them. Personally, I hope the movie does really well.
The qualities of a movie are often inversely proportional to the attending hype and there is an attempt here to overwhelm audiences with a marketing blitzkrieg that I suspect is meant to have as many pensioners as possible in and out of the cinemas so as the money is made before word of mouth can have any serious impact. As for the film itself;
1. Nicole Kidman jumoed the shark long ago
2. Baz Luhrman is a one trick dog - his schtick to date has been making overlength pop clips.. I suspect this film extends his one trick a film too far.. this will be to Luhrman what Heaven Gate was to Cimino
3. Hugh Jackman?? what can you say but that he makes a good wolverine.
As for `Australia' the film it has the aura of trying too hard.. ticking too many boxes.. too many cliches..
My forecast is for this to go down in the USA about the same way Kath and Kim has. DoA.. but then anything can happen in a country that has twice voted in a village idiot from Texas to be its president.
