New Beautiful Creatures Trailer Lets Emma Thompson Go Off The Deep End
With today marking the end of what seemed like the endless Twilight saga, it's time to start looking ahead to the next romantic young adult franchise that will build up a fervent fan base-- and believe me, Hollywood is already many steps ahead of you on that. The next year is bringing a veritable flood of young adult novel adaptations, from steamy romances in the Twilight vein to already solid franchises like The Hunger Games.
We highlighted a lot of these upcoming movies, and the books they're based on, in this recent feature, and now you can get a closer look at what looks like the most Twilight-esque of the bunch, Beautiful Creatures. Just in time to ride the last fevered wave of Twilight mania, a new trailer for the movie has arrived online. You can watch it embedded below or in HD at Apple.
Not being all that familiar with the book, I was surprised to watch this and see far more similarities to True Blood, from the Southern setting to the family full of hot, fairly evil people. Though the two leads-- Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich-- are largely unknowns, they're surrounded by a number of familiar faces, including Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons, and especially Emma Thompson as the evil witch who wants to bring Lena over to her side. I don't really know what to make of Thompson in this trailer, since her friendly Englishness has defined so much of her acting career, and I never imagined her playing an evil Southern witch. But hey, that's why they call it an acting stretch, and if anybody can pull off that kind of unlikely casting, it's Thompson.
Beautiful Creatures, which looks over-the-top and slightly ridiculous in all the best ways, comes to theaters on February 13 next year-- just in time for your own supernatural Valentine's Day.
