Ben Affleck Gets A 70s Beard In First Image From Argo
Warner Bros. has released their preview kit for the upcoming year, and while their big-ticket movies The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit are already out there big time with new trailers, they've quietly given us our first look at two smaller but also hotly anticipated films. Below you can see the first official images from both Argo, Ben Affleck's drama about the plot to rescue hostages held in Iran in 1979, and Gangster Squad, the new film from Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer about corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1940s. You probably don't need me to tell you which is which, but just in case, Argo is the one with Ben Affleck and a beard, and Gangster Squad is the other one. You can also click on the images to see the high-res versions.
Looking at these two photos from very different eras of recent history, it's funny to think of how trends change over time, and how we can look at them so differently. Sean Penn and Josh Brolin look nothing but dapper and cool in their photo, while Affleck and his mop of hair look nothing but hilarious, even though he seems to be doing very serious and important research. Fashion differences aside, though, it's hard to know which of these movies to look forward to more. Affleck has proven himself a capable director of drama with Gone Baby Gone and The Town, and Argo seems to provide some opportunities for farce, focusing on a group of CIA officers who faked a movie production in order to enter Iran. Fleischer, on the other hand, has made the comedies Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less, and Gangster Squad seems to be a turn toward drama. Gangster Squad might become the most hyped of the two for a simple reason-- Ryan Gosling, and the set photos snapped of him looking insanely dapper. I'm not saying we're all so shallow that we look forward to a movie simply because Ryan Gosling will look handsome in it, but hey… just because you won't admit it doesn't mean it's not true.
Both films are set for releases next fall, probably not coincidentally in the midst of Oscar season-- Argo comes to theaters September 14, while Gangster Squad follows a little over a month later, on October 19.
