Night at the Museum is one of the movies I'm most looking forward to in the next couple of months. For some reason, The Apple Dumpling Gang gets a lot more fun around Thanksgiving. Night at the Museum looks like it might be a return to the days of those great, wacky Disney fantasies like The Shaggy Dog, and it doesn't hurt that they've managed to sneak Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney into it.
The point of all this is to tell you that Fox is planning something fun with their upcoming Museum movie. The Hollywood Reporter says that they'll be releasing it in Imax the same day it arrives in normal theaters, in part to take advantage of the heavy concentration of Imax moviehouses in and around Museums.
Think about that a minute. What a great movie experience that could be for a family full of kids. You go to the museum, see the dinosaur exhibit, then walk into the Imax theater to watch a movie about the dinosaur bones coming to life and trying to eat Ben Stiller. Heck forget kids, I'm doing it. A quick trip through the hall of presidents, then take in a flick where the museum's Teddy Roosevelt display becomes animated. Sounds like a lot of fun.
If America's musty old museums have any sense, they'll take full advantage of this to get people interested in what they have to offer. There's a great opportunity here, let's hope they seize it.
