Ben Stiller's Tower Heist To Start Filming In November
Back in 2005, Jim Carrey and Téa Leoni starred in the largely forgettable film Fun With Dick and Jane. In the movie, the two actors play a couple that is financially ruined by a high-powered CEO, played by Alec Baldwin, and they decide to formulate a plan to steal their money back from him. But in a world where superhero franchises can be rebooted less than a decade later, why should any other genre be safe? Just slap a new name on it, get some different stars and it might as well be a whole different movie - even though it really isn't.
Deadline reports that the long gestating movie Tower Heist will go into production this November with Brett Rater directing, Ben Stiller producing and Brian Grazer producing (let me take this time to point out that Grazer also produced the movie mentioned above). So what is it about? Stiller plays a manager at a luxury hotel who loses all of his money in a Ponzi scheme. So what does he do? Forms a team to plan a heist so that he can get his money back. Basically, it's the exact same movie.
It's not as though Dick and Jane flopped at the box office - it actually earned over $200 million worldwide. What this really comes down to is Hollywood thinking that audiences have absolutely no attention span. They think that they can show us one movie, and then show us the exact same thing five years later without a word of protest. Well I for one am sick of it. I think it's time to...oh look, a kitty.
