If we're making a list of the best actors leading movies nowadays, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal are most certainly on there. The two men have proven time and time again that they are immensely talented performers who bring their all to every single role. It's for this reason that we're excited to announce that it looks like they will be going head-to-head in a new film called The Current War.

Variety has the scoop on this developing title, saying that Cumberbatch and Gyllenhaal are currently in negotiations for roles in the feature. Should they sign on, the former will be playing Thomas Edison, while the latter will play competitor George Westinghouse. Based on a screenplay by Michael Mitnick (The Giver), the plot will be set in the late 1880s and follow both Edison and Westinghouse as they battle for dominance in the electricity market. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who recently earned critical acclaim for his Sundance Film Festival darling Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, is helming the project, and Timur Bekmambetov, Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch are on-board to produce.

As you may have noticed, Jake Gyllenhaal has been all over the place in 2015 - which is irregular given that he really only ever does about one movie a year. But at the start of this year we saw the release of the political comedy Accidental Love (which was admittedly delayed for several years), and this summer saw the boxing drama Southpaw hit theaters. The guy can even be seen in theaters now, playing the long-haired, cocky Scott Fischer in Everest.

Benedict Cumberbatch hasn't been quite as busy, though he can currently be seen playing a key role alongside Johnny Depp in Scott Cooper's Black Mass. Sadly, we don't expect to see him again on the big screen for the rest of the year, but the good news is that Sherlock will be airing a Christmas Special at the end of the year. Beyond that, he will provide a voice in the animated feature Magik, is playing Shere Khan in Andy Serkis' Jungle Book: Origins, and will soon be starting production on Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange (in which he plays the titular hero).

The Current War sounds like the kind of drama that could eventually see itself getting noticed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences after its release, but exactly when we will it will be starting production is a bit of a question mark. As mentioned, Cumberbatch will be spending the end of this year mastering magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Gyllenhall recently signed on to an interesting drama called Nocturnal Animals from director Tom Ford. As such it may have to be the 2017 Oscar race that the Edison/Westinghouse drama gets involved in.
