Friday box office totals are in, and it should surprise absolutely no one to know that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest recorded the biggest opening in the history of cinema.
With the help from some really well attended midnight showings, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 made a massive $55.5 million dollars just on Friday. That's the biggest single day take for any movie, ever. It's not even a competition. The previous all time champ was Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith with a $50 million single day total. Pirates has swabbed the deck with X-Men: The Last Stand, Shrek 2, Spider-Man, and looks to be well on its way to beating Spider-Man's $114 million opening weekend record, and just about every other box office record ever recorded too.
The irony here is that the film's not even that good. Like X-Men: The Last Stand, it's gotten lackluster reviews and from what I can tell, exiting audience response isn't exactly euphoric either. For now though, that doesn't matter. The first film was so beloved that audiences were determined to return for more Captain Jack. Whether they'll go back a second and third time remains to be seen. Dead Man's Chest may break every opening weekend record in existence, only to trail off and miss out on breaking more long-term records.
Regardless, Disney has to be ecstatic right now. They have the biggest movie of this summer or any summer on their hands, and they're sailing through a sea of cash.
