The Cinema Audio Society will have its awards today, one of the last awards ceremonies to take place before the Oscars next Sunday. So while some people will be busy wondering if it's Transformers or No Country for Old Men that will win the sound prize tonight, Bill Condon will be sitting back and relaxing: he's already a winner.

The director of Kinsey and Dreamgirls is being honored with the society's filmmaker awards tonight. Part of this, Variety reports, is because Condon has written as well as directed several of his proejcts. That may not sound like too much of an achievement in the face of auteurs like P.T. Anderson, you might think, but given the massive and strange scale of a musical like Dreamgirls, it's not exactly an easy task. Dreamgirls also won the sound mixing award, so Condon has brought some fame to sound designers in the past.

Condon's name isn't being bandied about during this Oscar season, but he's been a contender many times before and probably will be again. He seems like an apt choice for the award, especially since, by not being nominated for an Oscar, the choice won't be seen as influencing the Oscar race at all. Personally I think we've got enough trouble predicting the awards to have to deal with another X-factor.
