I Love You, Phillip Morris has gone down a tortured road ever since starting with the promising concept of "Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as gay convicts." It premiered at Sundance, failed to get U.S. distribution for months, and was finally picked up by a tiny new distributor.

With just two months to go until the French premiere, we still don't really know when we'll see Phillip Morris stateside. In the meantime the French distributor, EuropaCorp, has come up with a trailer, snagged by Jim Carrey Online (via Slashfilm).

Honestly, watching the trailer, I finally understand why this movie had such a hard time finding a distributor. It's a weird combination of gay panic jokes, genuine gay romance, and serious violence, with Jim Carrey's character doing harm to himself and others to get back in jail and back to the one he loves. Plus Carrey is doing this weird Southern accent that makes him sound like one of those disgraced preachers or senators who are caught in a gay affair. Maybe that's the point, but based on the trailer, I'm not entirely sure Phillip Morris has a point at all.
