While Cate Blanchett has Queen Elizabeth’s life tied up, Emily Blunt is targeting young Queen Victoria in the aptly named The Young Victoria. Rupert Friend will play her Prince Albert in a can, in a movie that focuses on the early years of Victoria’s reign after her rise to power.

This week Victoria got a little more company: Jim Broadbent has joined the production as King William. As William was Victoria’s predecessor and the story is about her reign, I wouldn’t expect to see too much of Broadbent, which is always a shame. Raising young Victoria will be Miranda Richardson as the Duchess of Kent. Richardson will probably have a more sizable role since the Duchess served as Regent to the throne while Victoria was under age.

I don’t know why Queenly stories are so popular all of a sudden, but from the cast alone this looks to be just as promising as Blanchett’s Elizabeth series. Victoria’s story has just as much to work with and a rather promising cast coming together.
