Bond Comes Home![]()
There is probably nothing less interesting to even a hardcore movie fan than what soundstage a movie is going to film in (or on?) It’s not like we all sit around and say “oh, boy, the new Judd Apatow flick is shooting on #3 over at Warner Brothers.” Location shooting has some interest, but a set is a set no matter what building they throw it up in. Who really cares?
Variety does for one. They just announced that the next James Bond movie, currently untitled, will be based at the traditional Bond home studio, Pinewood in Jolly Old England. Casino Royale was based at Barrandov Studios in the Czech Republic, but for many years Pinewood was the home for Bond’s ridiculous underwater volcano hideout sets. In fact, the biggest soundstage on the lot is called the 007 Stage. A little known fact is that 007 is also James Bond’s agent number in the Bond movies and books. Impress your friends with that at a party sometime! Further solidifying the fact that this will have almost no impact on the actual movie; the decision is mostly based on tax credits. Previously, a U.K. film shot anywhere in the world could qualify for a tax break, but a new rule only allows for the break on money spent in the country. It’s almost like they only want to give tax breaks for things that help their own economy. That’s very insular thinking. Either way, the small credit that usually appears just before the name of the film stock at the end of the next Bond movie will mention Pinewood Studios, and for that we can all feel a little better. |
