Deciding that she has kept her anxious public waiting long enough, Jennifer Lynch will return to the big screen (or direct-to-DVD) with a new movie, Surveillance. Writer/director Lynch, the daughter of confusing/brilliant director David Lynch, has not made a movie since 1993. Since that movie was the execrable Boxing Helena it’s probably a good thing.
Variety says that Survellience will star Pell James, Bill Pullman, and Julia Ormond. The basic plot is the arrival of an FBI agent in a small town that is full of secrets, lies, and danger. Jennifer Lynch co-wrote the screenplay with actor Kent Harper. The elder Lynch is going to executive produce and the film should sully theaters in 2008.
Lynch’s previous directing experience, when she was 25, resulted a movie that critics and audiences hated with equal ferocity. Not everyone can pull of bizarre satire, even David Lynch stumbles on occasion, so it was no surprise she was out of her depth. Fifteen years later, we can hope that she’ll make something more in line with her abilities, whatever they may be.
