Danny Boyle is finally putting some rumors to rest, albeit a few months too late. When Fox Atomic was doing publicity for 28 Weeks Later, the follow up film to Boyle’s own 28 Days Later, they claimed Boyle did some second unit shooting on the sequel. Meanwhile, Boyle was making the rounds promoting the European release of his next picture, Sunshine, telling everyone he was only involved with the movie as an Executive Producer, and that the title was in name only.

Well, now Boyle is making the rounds for the American release of Sunshine and his story has changed. He recently told MTV News that he did do second unit filming and had enough fun doing it that he might consider getting involved with the franchise again.

Wait a minute, what franchise? Fox Atomic has pulled all future 28 Days movies from their slate and seems to be moving from the horror business to the comedy business, based on recent acquisitions. Would Boyle’s return be enough to get them to revive the franchise? Unknown. While he does talk about possibly doing a third picture after determining “whether it’s right or not,” he’s not entirely positive about the series. He talks ill about the whole concept of franchises and mentions that his experience shooting second unit on Weeks was fun because “there’s something about doing something trashy that’s great.”

Still, there’s no doubt that Boyle could reinvigorate the series, especially with an idea to ”move the story on” instead of just redoing what’s been done before. He’s already working on his post-Sunshine film, however, so another horror film would have to wait. Maybe that’s a good thing. With 28 Weeks Later headed for DVD in a few months, that time might give Fox a chance to reconsider their stance on the franchise.
