Looks like Shaft, Badrock, Vogue and Chapel are going to the big screen. Indian company Reliance Big Entertainment has acquired the rights to Rob Liefeld’s comic series, Youngblood. Brett Ratner, who claims the series has “tentpole potential,” has been attached to direct. Variety reports that Reliance paid “mid six figures” for Youngblood, which was originally published by Image but was most recently published Awesome Entertainment. The comic follows a group of youthful superheroes overseen by the US government. Shaft is a former FBI agent with a magnetic bow and arrow. Badrock is a teen transformed into a slab of stone. Vogue is a female Russian model with purple and white skin. Chapel is a former government assassin. The comic was the first series to be published by Image comics and broke records for being the best selling independent comic upon its premier. Youngblood ran from 1992-2004 and was best known for controversy surrounding its writers, not its quality. Although "Youngblood" is not super-well known by mainstream pop culture, Ratner is keeping the faith that America will catch on. He explained to Variety that “Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comicbooks left with tentpole potential. It was a real personal passion project for me, and a lot of people wanted [Youngblood], but the amazing thing about the guys at Reliance is the speed with which they’re able to move.” Sounds like the deal between Ratner and Reliance was quick and dirty. If by “gone” Ratner means “have already been made into movies,” he is sorely mistaken. Yes, many of the DC or Marvel superheroes have reached cinematic status, but there are still legendary characters that qualify as being totally viable, such as Black Canary, Hawkman or even Aquaman, and that is just DC alone! I personally would love to see an adaptation of Martian Manhunter’s character make it to the big screen. Is it me or is Youngblood sounding like a younger, hotter version of Fantastic Four? This Badrock sounds exactly like The Thing and the three men and a woman format is all too familiar. The creator of the comic worked for Marvel prior to co-founding Image comics and was disgruntled with the comic company. I think he took a few of those Marvel concepts with him.
