Even if it winds up getting whomped by Priest at the box office this weekend, Bridesmaids is still this weekend's most buzzed-about film, and regarded by many hopeful comedy fans as the first of many, many comedies that actually bother to show off female talent. Those of you hoping that Bridesmaids would kick off a new spate of female-driven comedies won't have to wait too long, either; according to Deadline the film's co-writer Annie Mumalo and co-star Melissa McCarthy have sold a pitch to Paramount Pictures for a comedy that McCarthy would star in.

Get ready for the pitch, but listen closely since it's pretty simple: "When your husband is ill and his doctors are out of ideas, piling in the minivan with your pals to steal the Stanley Cup is one way to go." Sure, it's a lot more complicated than the idea of a raunchy comedy about a group of bridesmaids, but McCarthy has proven her comedic chops on Gilmore Girls, Mike and Molly and now in Bridesmaids, and she and Mumalo both have a background with the Los Angeles comedy troupe The Groundlings, so there's plenty of comedic experience going into this. McCarthy's husband Ben Falcone helped come up with the idea, and he's also a Groundlings alum in addition to making an appearance in Bridesmaids--see, they're keeping it all in the family.

Before you get too excited about this new renaissance of female-led comedies, remember that selling a pitch to a studio is a long, long way from getting a movie made, and any number of things could get in the way of this film becoming a reality. For now, though, there's no reason not to look forward to it-- and in the meantime to see Bridesmaids, to increase the odds of this film actually happening.
