OK, I’m crying foul. What is the deal with movies about young women targeted by obsessed dudes? There was last fall’s P2, and the upcoming knockoff Pet, the entire Friday the 13th franchise, not to mention poor Neve Campbell’s character in Scream. Brittany Snow will play one such girl in the upcoming Prom Night, and now she’s looking to make a series out of it with her role in the new thriller Vicious Kind.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Snow, of Hairspray and TV’s “American Dreams,” will play a woman who goes home with her boyfriend for Thanksgiving, only to be targeted by his obsessed older brother. What do you think are the odds he traps her in some location in the house, and she has to run away and fight for her life? The movie is directed by Lee Tolland Krieger, who has only one minor credit to his name, so I guess I can give him the benefit of the doubt and assume the movie won’t be entirely generic. But really, should I give myself so much hope?
I like Brittany Snow, and thought she was great in Hairspray, and I hope she can get out of the screaming damsel in distress rut she seems to be heading for. After all, Rachel McAdams was in Red Eye and even The Notebook, and she’s managed to make a decent career for herself. Go ahead, scream and run away all you want Brittany, but don’t forget, there are some of us out there who think you’re better than that.
