The last bit of news we heard from the sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek was not exactly encouraging: despite the fact that it's been more than a year since the film came out, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have not completed a script, but that they did have a story that they are currently analyzing for holes. Fans have been patiently waiting for the next installment to start up and if actor Bruce Greenwood can be believed, then they may not have to wait much longer.

Speaking with Hollywood.com at the premiere of Dinner For Schmucks, Greenwood revealed that the plan is to start filming in January, but isn't even sure if he will be in the film. For those that don't remember (or aren't obsessive Trekkies), Greenwood played Captain Christopher Pike in the film, the man who recruited James T. Kirk to Star Fleet and served as the captain of the Enterprise before he was taken captive by the Romulans.

If true, this means that we won't be seeing Star Trek 2 until at least summer 2012, but it may just be the stars aligning. After all, that year is already scheduled to include not only Joss Whedon's The Avengers, but Christopher Nolan's sequel to The Dark Knight and the Superman reboot. The year 1969 may have been the "Summer of Love" but 2012 will be the "Summer of Geek."

Update! It's probably worth noting that a few weeks ago Trek producer Bryan Burk told Trek Movie that they plan to start shooting around this time next year. Greenwood's interview is more recent and could supersede his statements, but Burke is closer to the production and more likely to know what he's talking about... even if we all secretly hope it starts shooting sooner rather than later. Meanwhile writer Roberto Orci confirmed to TrekMovie that his script is due around Christmas this year and that pre-production will start in January. Maybe that's what Greenwood really meant.
