Things were looking a little hairy when he was trying to reboot Battlestar Galactica and ignore the entire TV series, but Bryan Singer is slowly working his way back into the embrace of the fans who made him what he is. He shocked pretty much everyone when he revealed he's signed on to direct an X-Men prequel, this one about Magneto and Professor Xavier and the early days of Professor X's school.

Today he's talking to Variety (via Coming Soon, which doesn't require a ridiculous paywall) about more details for his plan.

"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain."

Singer openly compared the project to the new version of Star Trek, but used it to defend the notion of a prequel in which you know the fates of the characters (i.e., the Star Wars prequel). Given how broad the X-Men universe is, and how much potential there is for Magneto and Professor X to do awful stuff to each other, I wouldn't worry about there being an interesting story tell. So long as they promise not to cast Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart and de-age them via CGI, I am willing to give this a shot.
