One of the keys to the 3D experience is light. Because audience members are essentially wearing sunglasses while watching a 3D film, the movie typically has to compensate by making things brighter. Otherwise, everything looks dark and muddled (a la Clash of the Titans). Because of this, a lot of people are going to start questioning Bryan Singer.

Bleeding Cool has learned that Singer plans on filming his next movie, Jack The Giant Killer, largely using natural light. The director will be using the new EPIC Red camera and appeared on the Red User forums on Christmas Eve to deliver the message. Singer says that he's doing it because the movie is set in a time before electricity, and that the "EPIC’s extraordinary exposure latitude will allow [him] to more effectively explore the use of natural light."

While Singer didn't outright say that he will be using fire and sunlight exclusively, like Stanley Kubrick did for Barry Lyndon, the idea goes against the rules that we've perceived for 3D technology thus far. It's entirely possible that the camera and lenses will make it so that we can't tell the difference, but only time will tell on that one. Until then, all we can hope for is that it actually adds to the story and isn't simply used as a gimmick that will hike up ticket prices.
