Those of you looking for someone to blame for the pussification job being done on our vampires by Twilight might want to take a look in the mirror. Did you watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Love Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I know I did. I have a sneaking suspicion that Stephanie Meyer did as well. Twilight is like Buffy watered down and rewritten at a fourth grade level. So it’s sort of ironic that it may be Twilight which will be responsible for breathing new life into the now long defunct Buffy franchise.
The rumor of Buffy’s resurgence was picked up by the guys over at Moviehole from the Herald Sun. Buried on page 51 of the paper was this little tidbit: “The monster success of girly vampire pic Twilight at the US Box office last weekend could kick open the door for a big-screen return of Joss Whedon’s much-loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit.”
This actually makes sense. Whenever something like Twilight is a big box office success, Hollywood instantly runs out and looks for something similar to shove out into theaters as a copycat. In this case, they don’t even have to resort to ripoff, since they can simply repurpose the property which Twilight is ripping off in the first place. If you’re going to do sensitive vampire romance movies, why not do it with Buffy? Give us strong female characters not pathetic waifs who fall for jerks just because they’re dangerous. And hey, if Joss Whedon really is writing the script it might even be good.
Odds are though that this is just a wild rumor concocted by a reporter fudging some wishful thinking. Whedon has shown no interest in returning to Buffy since the series’ completed its run on television and there’s no reason to think he’d suddenly change his mind, just because he’s being ripped off (and poorly) by Stephanie Meyer. Wait for Joss to deliver some sort of confirmation until you put much stock in the Herald Sun’s wild proclamations.
