There’s a lot of excitement about Tim Burton’s next movie, an adaptation of the gruesome murder musical Sweeney Todd starring Johnny Depp. Well, everyone but the studio funding it is excited that is. It seems Warner Brothers wants it to be gruesome… but not too gruesome. SlashFilm has picked up a story from The Daily Mail which says that the WB is pressuring Burton to make massive cuts to his movie in order to water it down to a PG-13.
The Daily Mail story says, “The thing is, the studio really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible - which means stemming the blood flow. But that’s a bit difficult for a story involving a guy who gets high slitting throats.”
It’s the same old song and dance. Screw artistic integrity, let’s make a movie that grandmas and teenagers can buy a ticket to see. Meanwhile, somewhere out there, Uwe Boll is being allowed to make anything he wants. This is Tim Burton after all, he’s not some idiot first-time director fresh in off the turnip truck. The guy is a proven commodity, you’d think Warners would have a little faith in him. Apparently all their interested in is making a movie that’ll play broad, screw whether or not it’s any good. Of course if they wanted that, then maybe they shouldn’t have commissioned a movie about a barber who runs around slitting throats. Or, maybe they shouldn’t have hired Tim Burton to make it. Dark and disturbed is sort of his thing.

I have seen almost all T.B's movies and his movies are dark but they are not always a blood bath! Any moron movie maker can make a stupid no brainer slasher movie! It is so easy to show the blood flow! Grandma's and teenagers? I am 36 and I do not want to sit through the same gory movies! After the POTC series J.Depp has gathered a younger fan base,it would be nice if they toned it down, because there are certain disturbed people out there that we as a society affect with all the violence in movies and t.v.It is nice to see a movie company taking responsability for once! Come on we want a good movie! Slitting throats and showing all the blood and gore is a waste of time, boring! Tim Burton is talented enough without having to resort to that crap!
To the person above me, I would like to say that even tho Johnny has been through the POTC series, he's always been like that. And Sweeney Todd is suppose to be gory, so let the damn director do his thing and make it gory. NO ONE SAYS YOU HAVE TO WATCH!
I doubt what they're worrying about is Hostel-type carnage; if anything, gratuitous shots of blood, because after all, ST's a revenge flick, (could even be pressed to call it a dark comedy if you've heard A Little Priest,) and the MC goes knife-happy on some throats. Johnny did this in From Hell, and it was not terribly hard on the eyes. I'm particularly squeamish, in fact, but I was able to watch that, even considering it's about Jack the Ripper, and there was on occasion some seriously nasty stuff to look at. It was all about the presentation.
I can't help but feel like after Pirates, they aren't wanting Johnny to do anything too disturbing because, OHMGOD, Captain Jack is KILLING THE PEOPLES. D< Seriously.
come on guys, if you don't like Tim Burton's style don't see his movies. His movies are disturbed for who sees them as diturbed. How can you day that edward scissorhands was disturbing, a modern movie about the beauty and the beast. Than sweeney todd is not that spookey only because there is a barber that cuts everyone's throats. After all it is all fantasy and not reality, and if you cannot distinguish between the two go on watching stupit TV series like seven heaven or other dramas about good faithful christians
if you dont like movies with gore and blood spurting out of peoples necks then don't go see it. it is as easy as 1. 2. 3. but i do recomend Sweeney Todd. It is the best movie I have seen yet!
