The concept of the movie Bride Wars is pretty ugly from a feminist point of view. Two best friends, played by Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, plan their weddings on the same day, and proceed to fight about locations, guests and all the rest instead of, you know, working it out like normal people. Because, as everyone knows, when women get married they go completely insane, and are incapable of rational thought!

So even though I’m already disposed to hate this movie, I’m kind of glad to see that Candice Bergen has joined the cast. Not because I think it will be some great part for her, although Variety’s description of her character, Marion St. Claire, as “the queen of all wedding planners” is pretty hilarious. But Bergen hasn’t been in a movie since 2003, and even those were lame rom-coms (Sweet Home Alabama, Miss Congeniality). Not like Bride Wars won’t be the same deal, but at least she’ll be getting her face out there.

Bergen’s most memorable role in recent years, for me at least, was as a Vogue magazine editor on Sex and the City. She was hilarious and also tough as an aging woman in the world of fashion, and seems like she could bring a lot of that to her role in Bride Wars. Not to mention that the women this movie will be targeting will probably know every episode of SATC by heart, even if they’ve never seen Murphy Brown. Even after all these years in the business, Bergen still knows how to target an audience.

Yeah, it’s depressing that a feminist icon like Bergen is taking roles in middling romantic comedies, but what are you gonna do? Meryl Streep was in The Devil Wears Prada, after all, and that turned out pretty well. We can cross our fingers for this movie not to be awful, but we’ll probably be wasting our time. Maybe we can just hope Bergen gets a role worth her talents one of these days.
