Cannes Gets Dragged To Hell![]()
As has been speculated for a while now, many of the usual suspects will be appearing at the Cannes Film Festival next month (while we plebes remain in our offices, far away from the French beach, of course). Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock will be screening in competition, representing the only American films competing at the festival.
But just because there aren't other Americans in the contest, that doesn't mean it's a bunch of nobodies. Also competing, according to Variety, will be Jane Campion with Bright Star, Pedro Almodovar with Broken Embraces, Lars von Trier with Antichrist, and Isabel Coixet with Map of the Sounds of Tokyo, among others. American films screening out of competition include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell (at a midnight slot, of course), Lee Daniel's Sundance smash Precious, and as previously announced, opening night film Up. A handful of Asian auteurs are making appearances in the competition slots as well, including Johnnie To (Vengeance) and Park Chan-wook (Thirst). You can check out the full list of films below, as reported in Variety. It's an impressive lineup, including films that have already been hotly anticipated for months and surely at least a few that will come out of nowhere and surprise everyone. Too bad Head Honcho Tyler denied me used of the Cinema Blend private jet to attend this year. Damn recession!
