This summer superheroes go retro, with the first two comic book movies ever to be set in a time period that isn’t the modern era. X-Men: First Class looks like it’s set right around the time Austin Powers was first frozen, and Captain America: The First Avenger is set during World War II. If there’s a sequel though, don’t expect him to stay in the past. Chris Evans has confirmed what we already assumed to be so: Cap is headed into the future.

That might be a spoiler except, well, it sort of has to happen in order for Captain America to show up in The Avengers. That Joss Whedon directed film is set in the modern era. And Evans says that yes indeed, Captain America: The First Avenger ends with him traveling through time into the future.

Once they get past Avengers to Captain America 2, Evans says we should expect it to be a “fish out of water story”. “He’s a man, not in his time. And it’s just kind of come to terms with the way the world is now, how much it’s changed since the 40s.”

Evans started work on The Avengers just this week and for that film, we should probably expect it to be about the chemistry between the different superheroes involved. Evans says specifically, “There’s a dichotomy, a kind of friction between myself and Tony Stark. They’re polar opposites, one guys is flash, spotlight and smooth and the other guy is selfless and in the shadows and kinda quiet and they’re opposites and they have to get along.
