The X-Men franchise isn't the only one having confusing alterations made. According to the Hollywood Reporter, MGM and Sony are having their script for Casino Royale overhauled. The original version, drafted by The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day writers Neil Purvis and Robert Wade, is being rewritten by Paul Haggis.
Haggis is best known these days a Clint Eastwood's best friend. Haggis was recently nominated for writing Eastwood's Oscar-mugging Million Dollar Baby and also wrote Eastwood's latest project Flags of Our Fathers, which is filming at present. Around here we prefer to note Haggis as the writer and director of one of this years best films, Crash.
Martin Campbell who directed GoldenEye will reportedly return to the directors chair for Casino Royale. Still no word on who will play 007. The Bond franchise has been cursed with an inability to find someone to play the lead role. Brosnan has been irreversibly and unapologetically thrown from the role and offers made to certain others actors have been turned down.
A rewrite at this point spells more delays for the film, which doesn't bode well for a franchise that hasn't gone this long without an entry. Only once since the first film, Dr. No was released in 1967, has more than three years passed without a new Bond adventure. The twentieth film, Die Another Day, which co-starred Halle Berry, was released three years ago and it may be another three before Casino Royale hits. Perhaps it's just further proof that Berry may be bad news for any franchise.
