Channing Tatum Could Direct Magic Mike 2
Back in July, when asked about a possible sequel to Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, star and producer Channing Tatum told fans they were working on a concept for a follow-up, and that they're looking to "flip the script and make it bigger." Beyond that, we can really only guess what they have in mind for Magic Mike 2, and assume it will include a few great dance scenes, much like the first one did. Now there are a few new clues about the movie, including the possibility of Tatum directing.
The male stripper-focused drama Magic Mike earned itself more than $100 million at the box office domestically since its June release, so a sequel isn't surprising. But with Steven Soderbergh taking a break from filmmaking, who will direct? German site FilmStarts.com had the opportunity to speak with Tatum and his fellow Magic Mike producer Reid Carolin about the Magic Mike sequel, and that subject came up.
(It should be noted up front that I don't speak German, so I'm relying on a browser-translated version of the article. Those who speak German can find the article untranslated here)
From what the site reports, it sounds like they have a "road movie" in mind for the story. They're currently looking for a director if they aren't able to get Soderbergh back. Gregory Jacobs' name was mentioned, perhaps as a possibility or someone they have in mind to helm the film. Jacobs directed the 2007 thriller Wind Chill, starring Emily Blunt. From what Tatum says it also sounds like Carolin and Tatum are also possibilities to direct. Neither have any feature directing credits yet, but considering their involvement in the first film, Magic Mike 2 would be a fitting project to try their hands at directing.
At this point, it doesn't sound like anything is set in stone, but at the very least it seems like they're still working on getting things lined up for the project. Availability will also be a factor, no doubt. Tatum has a number of projects in the works, including White House Down, and the anticipated sequel to 21 Jump Street, so we may have to wait a while to see him dancing again.
