Charlize Theron Looks Upset In New Poster For Young Adult
Ah, Diablo Cody. She's been an Academy Award-winning writer courtesy of Juno, the movie that turned her into Hollywood "It Girl" of the moment. She's been the subject of inevitable backlash over the mediocre -- but not nearly as awful as many insisted -- Jennifer's Body. She's even teamed up with Steven Spielberg to tackle TV with Showtime's United States of Tara. This December she's returning to her Juno-esque roots with the black comedy Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron and reuniting Cody with her Juno director Jason Reitman. Now Paramount has released a new poster to Hitfix, putting Theron's character front and center.
I love the minimalistic style of the poster, letting Theron's expression and the wardrobe tell you plenty about her character, Mavis Gray. She's a divorced writer returning to her small-town home in Minnesota. She arrived hoping to spark things up with an ex, only to learn that he's now married and has kids. That's the sort of discovery that would provoke a look like... well, a lot like the one in the poster, I suppose.
A reunion between Cody and Reitman sounds promising, and the premise sounds right up their alley. Early reports sound positive, with Oscar buzz building around both Theron and Patton Oswalt, who plays Mavis' best friend. (Oswalt was also in the cast for United States of Tara, so it's no surprise to see him turning up in Young Adult). This could be a non-inspirational dark gem for the holidays, the antidote to yet another damn airing of It's a Wonderful Life. At any rate, it'll probably be better than Jennifer's Body.
It's also worth noting that, while this new poster is decent enough, it's not even half as cool as the movie's teaser poster artwork, or some of the posters for the movie's various "pop-up screenings" around the country. You can check them out in the gallery below.
Young Adult opens in limited release on December 9th, then goes wide on December 16th.
