Chris Pine And Amanda Seyfried Survive In Craig Zobel's Z For Zachariah
Post-apocalyptic movies and movies about young adults are both bombarding audiences these days, and when you combine the two you can get mega-hits like The Hunger Games (or lesser hits like The Host). Now Compliance director Craig Zobel is getting in on the genre, adapting the beloved young adult sci-fi novel Z for Zachariah, and its newly signed cast would make us pay attention to the project even if we were actually living through the apocalypse ourselves.
Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried and Chiwetel Ejiofor will all star in Z for Zachariah, according to The Hollywood Reporter. At one point Tobey Maguire was set to star, but he’ll just be taking on a producer role for now, through his Material Pictures production company. Everyone can now take a deep breath and remember that this is a children’s book. And while nothing at all is wrong with the source material – the novel’s author won the Newberry Medal for 1972’s Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - changes will have to be made given the cast’s relatively advanced.
It’s being labeled a psychological thriller, where Seyfried will play a teenage survivor of an apocalypse who meets up with Ejiofor, a scientist, and falls in love with him. Once they run into another survivor, played by Pine, things get a little more complicated, and then spoilers happen.
Chris Pine is currently commanding starships in Star Trek Into Darkness, while Lovelace’s Seyfried will soon be filming Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West. Ejiofor will soon be seen in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.
With a screenplay written by Nissar Modi (Breaking at the Edge), Z for Zachariah is set to begin filming in August.
