It was a bummer when Christoph Waltz followed up his awesome Oscar win with the decision to bail on David Cronenberg's next film. And while he actually left that film in order to play another villain in Water for Elephants, he's at least taking time to do a real passion project too-- THR reports that Waltz will make his directorial debut with the German romantic comedy Auf und Davon.

Yes, Hans Landa is making a romantic comedy, which I guess means he's taking his mission not to be typecast very seriously. The film is about the female host of a reality TV dating show who starts to fall for one of the contestants. Execs at Fox International, which is producing the film, are being straightforward about the movie's chances of a U.S. release, and note that we may not even see it here. Though given how busy his acting schedule is and how long it will likely be before he can make the film, maybe he'll be such a giant star by then that they'll have no choice but to bring it to us. I mean, who wouldn't want to check this out?
